What should I do first when a circuit breaker trips in my home?

First, reset the tripped breaker by moving it fully OFF, then back ON. Unplug devices on that circuit before you reset to reduce overload. If it trips again immediately, stop resetting and call a licensed electrician.

  • Check and reset any GFCI outlets on the same circuit.
  • Note which rooms lost power to help diagnosis.
  • Harrison Electric starts at the panel, tests by elimination, explains the cause, and completes most repairs in one visit with our Warehouse on Wheels in Minneapolis.
